Duration: 17 Night / 18 Days
Destinations: Uttarakhand

This trek starts at Munsyari and the route ascends up the Gori Ganga river gorge which separates the Nanda Devi range from the beautiful peaks of the Panch Chulli range. The 28 km long trek makes you see the biggest glacier in Kumaon region. At the altitude of 4268m you would see the the origin of the rivers Kali and Gori Ganga. On the way to the destination, one has to walk downhill along the Gori-Ganga River, pass through densely forested area comprising of rhododendron trek, conifers, chestnut and bamboo, and cross the Gor-Ganga River. On the way, one can enjoy the spectacular view of the Nanda Devi and Hardeol peaks right up to Milam glacier. This moderate to tough trek gains altitude while moving towards Milam village.

The snout of Milam Glacier is around 2 hours trek from the village. From Munsyari you have to drive 5 km till Selapani where the trek starts. After a 1800m descend you will have to walk along the Gori- Ganga River crossing Bhuj village you will reach a place from where you have to ascend for about 1 hour to reach Lilam. Lilam is a small gathering of huts with a small camping place. From Lilam the trail enters a spectacular 25 km long gorge. Etched into the cliff face above the Gori Ganga, the hillsides above are covered in dense bamboo thickets and mixed rain forest.

After the junction of the Ralam and Gori Ganga rivers the trek climbs to a tea shop at Radgari, and then goes to a small rest house at Bugdiar (2700m). Next day the route enters progressively drier terrain, but there are two waterfalls of about 100 m, one of them opposite a tea shop at Mapang, where you can rest your weary limbs and take in the limited available refreshments. Further trek uphill brings you to Railkot (3130m). Next morning, trek goes towards Martoli(3340mts), a huge village which used to be the major center of the Indo-Tibetan trade route before 1962. There used to be 500 families in this village, but now you can hardly find five inhabited houses. The carvings on the doors and windows of the houses in the village are very beautiful.

At Martoli one gets the first views of Nanda Devi ranges and the peaks behind the Milam glacier. One could get a good view of the Martoli peak (4550m) which is a small and beautiful hill towering the village. From one end of the village the trail descends sharply towards the meeting of the Goriganga and the Lwan gaad river which flows from the Nanda devi east and Nanda Khat. Next Morning start trekking to reach Mapa (3328 mt) by covering approximately 10 kms and then to reach Milam Village (3423 mt) by covering appox 10 kms. Overnight stay in tents. Morning, after breakfast, start trekking (20 km) to reach Milam Glacier 3926m. Arrive and enjoy the panoramic view from the glacier. It is just 4 kms away from the village, this is a short and easy trek and is full of scenic beauty and spectacular vision of high Himalaya and snow capped peaks.

On the start of the glacier there is a board with a sign marking an altitude of 3500m, after this the trail almost disappears with only stone markers kept at small distances. The route goes through the glacial moraines which is full of rocks and you might have to cross a small streams occasionally. In front of you seen the seven thousand meter peaks Hardeol (7161m) and Trishuli(7070m). You can also trek to Nanda - devi East camp Return to Milam village for overnight stay in tents.
